Looking to modernize the AKM, the Russian Military decided to adopt the lower recoil, flatter shooting and much lighter 5.45mm cartridge to replace the 7.62x39 cartridge previously used (similar to how the West moved from 7.62x51 down to 5.56mm.) The original AK-74 was still a wooden AK with fixed stock and no solutions for the mounting of optical sights. In 1991 the AK-74MN was introduced, which replaced the wooden bits with more durable polymer furniture, including a side folding stock, and added a AK-family dovetail for side-mounted optics mounts.
