Getting your PAL and RPAL together is more efficient, cost-effective, convenient, and "future-proofs" your ability to own a wider variety of firearms.

  • Saves Money: Combined course bundles cost significantly less than paying for two separate classes. You also avoid paying the extra $46.92 upgrade fee to the RCMP later.

  • Saves Time: Both courses can be finished in a single weekend because they share 80% of the same safety material.

  • One Background Check: You complete the mandatory background checks, reference calls, and multi-month RCMP processing queue just once.

  • Future-Proofs Your Record: Your Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) completion remains on your RCMP record permanently. If laws change, or if you need an RPAL for a job or range membership, you won't have to retake the course.

Bottom Line: Upgrading later requires taking a second weekend class, paying double the administrative fees, and waiting through the entire RCMP background check process a second time.

FAQ:

  • What's the point of the RPAL now that handguns are all illegal?
Even with the handgun freeze under Bill C-21, an RPAL remains valuable for several practical reasons:
      1. Restricted Long Guns:  Certain short-barreled rifles and shotguns still fall into the restricted category, not non-restricted.
      2. Shooting Restricted Firearms at Ranges:  It allows you to shoot handguns or restricted rifles owned by friends, rental ranges, or clubs without requiring direct, arms-length supervision.
      3. Range Membership:  Many gun clubs require members to hold an RPAL regardless of what firearms they personally own.
      4. Competitive Sports & Exemptions:  Active IPSC, IDPA, or 3-Gun competitors and specific occupational roles (like armored guards or exempted athletes) still rely on it.
      5. Future Policy Changes:  Maintaining the license keeps your qualifications active if regulations or legal frameworks change down the road.
    • Can a minor take these courses?
Minors aged 12-17, with parental or guardian approval, can take both of these courses but can only apply for a PAL.  You must be 18 or older to apply for the RPAL.
    • What happens if I fail the exam?
You need to book a re-test for $99, please check with our staff for available times.
    • What time should I arrive?
The courses start at 9:00am. Non-Restricted is up to 8 hours of instruction, and Restricted is up to 6 hours of instruction.
    • What should I bring?
A pen, light snacks / lunch, and a water bottle
    • What is the cancellation policy?
You may reschedule your course up to 48 hours prior to the day, sorry no refunds.
    • Can I take only the Restricted course?
You are required to take the Non-Restricted course before you can take the Restricted course.
    • Do you offer the course in languages other than English?
We have instructors that speak English, French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Cantonese. However the course will be instructed in English. The examination (multiple choice) will be witten in English or French, and the verbal instructions during the practical exam will be given in English.
